Studio Matongé at JAM Hotel Gent: mud cloth joins committed hospitality

Studio Matongé au JAM Hotel Gent : le bogolan s’invite dans l’hôtellerie engagée

MSINGI cushions at the heart of JAM rooms

Last September, we were delighted to see our mud cloth grey MSINGI cushions featured in the rooms of the brand new JAM Hotel Gent. Selected by atelier Lionel Jadot, these cushions tell the story of a unique textile: spun, woven, and dyed by hand in Mali, then crafted in Belgium with atelier Mulieris, a social integration and promotion workshop. Each piece is unique, marked by the irregularities that make the beauty of handmade items.

When design, craftsmanship, and ecological awareness meet

The JAM Hotel Gent opened its doors in September in a place steeped in history: the former barracks of the Belgian army, in the heart of Ghent.Driven by the Nelson Group, the hotel is part of a sustainable and circular vision: preserving the authenticity of the building, reusing materials, and choosing a heat pump to eliminate fossil fuels.
With its 110 rooms, rooftop bar, and restaurant/bar area, the JAM Hotel is designed as a responsible, vibrant, and open place in the city, just steps from the Citadel Park, museums, and the student district.

The Lionel Jadot Studio: creativity and vision

Architect, designer, and scenographer, Lionel Jadot is renowned for his ability to transform spaces into true experiences. Founder of the collective Zaventem Ateliers, he brings together a community of artisans and creators who push the boundaries between architecture, design, and art.His approach is based on upcycling, inventiveness, and the dialogue between raw materials and refined finishes.
The decision to include our MSINGI grey mud cloth cushions at JAM Hotel Gent follows this logic: combining aesthetics, authenticity, and durability, while showcasing artisanal know-how from elsewhere.

🔎 Focus on Lionel Jadot & Zaventem Ateliers
Lionel Jadot is a Brussels-based architect, designer, and scenographer with abundant creativity. His work deliberately blurs the boundaries between disciplines, blending architecture, design, art, and craftsmanship. Known for his upcycling approach and his taste for experimentation, he imagines unique spaces where raw materials and refined finishes interact boldly.
In 2018, he founded Zaventem Ateliers, a former industrial site transformed into a 6,000 m² creative laboratory. This venue brings together more than 30 independent artisans, artists, and designers, all driven by the same ambition: to reinvent the arts and crafts professions and explore new synergies between know-how and innovation.
With projects ranging from hotel design (including the JAM Hotel Gent) to artistic installations, Lionel Jadot has established himself as a key figure on the contemporary European design scene.

“There is no planet B”

The inauguration was held around a strong theme: “There is no planet B.” A way to affirm that design and craftsmanship can no longer be considered without ecological awareness. For Studio Matongé, being associated with this project demonstrates that African textile traditions naturally engage in dialogue with contemporary European creation.

The essence of Studio Matongé

At Studio Matongé, each object tells a story: that of the hands that shaped it and the cultures that intersect within it. Seeing our MSINGI cushions take their place at JAM Hotel Gent is to continue this mission: weaving connections between Africa and Europe, between heritage and contemporary creation.

✨ Our MSINGI cushions remind us that an object can be more than just decor: a bridge between past and present, between here and elsewhere.
