The expertise of Kenana Knitters

Le savoir faire des Kenana Knitters - Studio Matongé
Kenana Knitters is a non-profit association located in Njoro, a rural area of  Nakuru County in Kenya, about 200km from Nairobi.

Here, women generally do not benefit from the same rights or opportunities as men in  terms of paid employment, access to land ownership, etc.

Agricultural wages, which are primarily accessible to men, are often not sufficient on their own to meet the needs of the large and extended families typical of Africa.

Pillars of the household, women must therefore balance their unpaid domestic activities (housework,  subsistence farming, child education,  care for elderly family members, etc.) with very low-income work.

For Kenana Knitters, women are at the heart of their communities, which is why the cooperative strives to empower them to take charge of their own lives through dignified work in a safe environment that fosters the well-being of their families.

The main objective of Kenana Knitters is to provide its knitters with a fair source of income that goes directly to them, so that they can improve their quality of life and that of their families.

Kenana Knitters is proud to develop  eco-friendly production and social support policies  :

- both for the production of its unique and entirely handmade plush toys (organic cotton, natural dyes, locally sourced wool)

- and for the social and cultural support that the members of Kenana Knitters provide to their knitters, particularly on agricultural issues and childcare.

The proceeds from sales Kenana Knitters help women create a better future by also funding, for its women artisans, the organization of computer or literacy classes and action and information campaigns such as HIV testing, family planning sessions, and other counseling services for well-being, family, and health.
