A round head, a plump little tummy and a soft touch: MICHEL is a bear soft toy with vintage charm, hand-knitted in Kenya from Kenyan wool. Its three natural shades are undyed ecru, blue from red cabbage and beige from plectranthus leaves, an aromatic East African plant. Available in two sizes: S, 34 cm, for little arms, and L, 50 cm, for full-sized hugs. Signed by its knitter, it makes a lovely gift for a new baby or a child, or a keepsake of your own.

Knitted and sewn by hand by the women of Kenana Knitters, a social enterprise founded in 1998 by Patricia Nightingale in Njoro, in Kenya’s Rift Valley. Set up to create a market for rural women spinning wool at home, it now supports more than 300 knitters and 200 spinners. The wool comes from small Kenyan farms that do not practise mulesing. Depending on the colour, the wool is left undyed or coloured with plant-based dyes or conventional azo- and cadmium-free dyes.

Each piece is signed by the woman who knitted it. Small variations in colour or shape make every soft toy unique: a piece to give, treasure and pass on.

Why we love it (and baby does too)

A gentle everyday companion, this soft toy is there for baby at every stage of their early development:

  • A source of comfort during separation or anxious moments
  • Helps baby soothe themselves, with something to cuddle or nibble for reassurance
  • Offers emotional support, encouraging the expression of feelings and the development of empathy
  • Encourages independence, helping baby cope with transitions and get used to sleeping in their own bed.

Merci . Respectueuses salutations . Patrice Brochery
