DEÑC-MITI is a round decorative box handcrafted in Senegal. Its wooden structure is covered in leather, from the lid to the interior. Its pattern is created directly on the leather using a resist-dyeing technique adapted to the material. Colours spread across the entire surface while allowing the grain of the leather to show through.

The design draws on the visual language of Koko Dunda, a cotton fabric hand-dyed in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso. Koko Dunda is a textile tradition: DEÑC-MITI is neither made from this fabric nor covered with fabric bonded to its surface. The artisan adapts its folding and resist-dyeing techniques to leather.

The leather is prepared and softened, then folded or crumpled and secured to create areas that take up the colour differently. The dye is applied using a process suited to leather, without prolonged immersion in a hot bath. After drying in the shade, a protective finish helps stabilise the shades. Slight differences in line and intensity are part of this handwork.

The placement of the pattern and the colour combinations vary from piece to piece. Purple and ochre, turquoise and natural leather, coral and green, cobalt or fuchsia make up seven distinct objects. Each variant corresponds to the piece photographed.

On a bedside table, console or desk, DEÑC-MITI holds jewellery, keys, small accessories and treasured objects. Even when closed, it is a decorative object in its own right.

  • Dust with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Occasionally apply a neutral, colourless product suitable for leather, after testing on an inconspicuous area.
  • Allow it to absorb, then buff gently.
  • Avoid water, soaking, abrasive products, alcohol, solvents, heat and prolonged sun exposure.
  • The leather may develop a natural patina over time.

DEÑC-MITI plays with changes of scale and material. A design born in the world of textiles meets the grain of leather and the crisp shape of wood. The box can stand alone, be paired with a DUNDA tablecloth or placed alongside KUMASI covers to carry colour from one object to another. It finds its place in a bedroom, hallway or workspace, as a jewellery box, keepsake box or decorative object.

Preparing your order

  • Orders are prepared within 1–2 working days, except during special periods. We dispatch from Belgium, Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays.
  • We use environmentally responsible packaging: cardboard and kraft paper, keeping plastic to a minimum.

Delivery

  • Delivery to Belgium and other EU countries usually takes 2–5 working days after dispatch, except during special periods.
  • Free delivery on orders of €50 or more to Belgium, France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
  • Free delivery on orders of €200 or more to our other EU destinations.
  • Below these thresholds, charges depend on the destination and the weight and size of the parcel. The amount is shown before you confirm your order.
  • For deliveries within the EU, prices include VAT and there are no customs charges to pay.

Returns

  • You have 14 days after receiving your order to request a return using the contact form or your customer account, followed by a further 14 days to send the items back.
  • Returns from Belgium are free. For returns from our other delivery destinations, a flat fee of €8 is deducted from your refund.
  • If an item is faulty, damaged or not as described, Studio Matongé covers the full return cost, regardless of your country.
  • We always provide a return label, so you do not have to pay any return charges upfront.
